1.  Argument Essay
All of the 6th graders will be doing this in-class essay. I, Mrs. Hauck-Wood, need to see what you can do, and I need to be able to show others what you can do. You have learned so much and this is your time to show off to the people in charge.

You will get three texts to read, annotate, and take notes on. Be as detailed as you can today. It will make your life easier tomorrow. This will take us a few days to do, so DO NOT RUSH.

Prompt:

Should our school participate in the national “Shut Down Your Screen Week”? Be sure to use evidence from the texts, as well as your own knowledge, to support and develop your thinking.

Article Summary of "The Search for a Sports Star"

Club Social Parque, located in Argentina, has trained some of the world's best athletes. They play football—or soccer, as it's known in the U.S.

Lesson Objectives

Key Concepts

  1. Club Social Parque is an academy in Argentina, where youth hone their skills in football (called soccer in the United States). About 150 children--some as young as 6 years old--train there together twice a week and compete on the weekends.
  2. Ramón Maddoni is a 75-year-old coach who oversees the players' drills at Parque. Maddoni has worked with dozens of kids who went on to play professionally.
  3. Some of the players who trained at Parque went on to join Argentina's national team. At least 40 players who trained at Parque went on to become international stars.

Lesson Vocabulary
